Minerals - Ethnoscience Glossary Terms and Abbreviations
Minerals are inorganic substances that play important roles in many of the body's biochemical processes. Minerals that are needed in relatively large amounts are called macronutrients. These include calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and sulphur. Minerals that are only needed in very small or trace amounts are called micronutrients. These include chromium, cobalt, copper, fluoride, iodide, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium and zinc. Many minerals can be found in common multivitamins. Iron however, is often required as an additional supplement. Iron supplements can be difficult on digestion, so choose a carbonyl iron product, which is more easily tolerated by the body.
