Placebo-controlled clinical trial - Ethnoscience Glossary Terms and Abbreviations
In this type of clinical trial, the participants are split into two groups. The people in the control group are given an inactive substance or placebo and the therapy under study is given to the other patient group (verum). Otherwise, the two groups are treated exactly the same, and go through the same tests and evaluations. The use of this placebo control reduces any bias in the results that may result from the participant's expectations. By comparing the results from the experimental group to those of the placebo group, researchers can determine how much of the therapeutic effect was actually due the therapy being studied and how much was simply due to the patient's belief that they were receiving a medicine.
